Summary / Abstract (Note) | The evolution of the European Union (EU) into a federal political super-state has come to a halt following the rejection of a constitution by two of its founding states. The reasons for the popular discontent are complex. As Adil Hasan Khan and Betwa Sharma recall, it is clear that most citizens of member countries want the Union to ensure economic prosperity and stability but are suspicious of the supranational EU hierarchy's political ambitions and are desirous of keeping their respective sovereignties. |
