Summary / Abstract (Note)The Turkish political system has experienced myriad changes since its transition to democracy in 1983, including a shift in labor's role. Although only studied infrequently, labor constitutes an important arena of Turkish politics. This essay investigates the historical development of Turkish labor, with particular focus on its transformation since the mid-1980s. The essay argues that the threefold shift in the political strategies, the socioeconomic structure, and the ideo-intellectual attitude of labor has turned it into an important actor in Turkish democratization
