Summary / Abstract (Note)The Seventeenth National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), held on October 15-21, 2007, produced a new central Committee. Interestingly, the institutional balance of the new committee is remarkably similar to that of the Sixteenth Central Commitee elected in November 2002. The provincial units remain the most powerful institution with tha largest total representation index (42 percent). The central institutions are in second place with the same index (34 percent) as the previous committee. The military institutions are third with 19 percent, also the same as previously. And the corporations have a higher representation with 5 percent, compared to 4 percent in 2002.
