Summary / Abstract (Note)In 1990 NATO expanded its member's national roster from 16 to 19 nations with the inclusion of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. In 2004 and 2008, respectively, the organization expended to 26 members states, and then 28 as Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia and finally Albania and Croatia, joined its ranks. These new states, rototilling 13 new members from Eastern Europe and the Balkans, represents somewhat less than half of the alliance's membership. their participation has helped reshuffle the strategic policies of NATO in directions that are now considerably different from the organization's original 1949 charter, direction mandating refocused regional commitments and new global peacekeeping and security roles for its members.
