Summary / Abstract (Note)Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to upgrade its tactical and medium airlift capability, have been setback by a number of years as a result of repeated delays. The result is that the IAF can now expect to induct a modern tactical transports and medium transports, in meaningful numbers only by the end of this decade. The Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) being designed by United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is substantially delayed and is now scheduled to make its maiden flight by 2019-2020. The IAF at present operates the obsolete, HAL license produced HS-748 ‘Avro’ (inducted between the Sixties and Eighties) and Antonov An-32s inducted between 1984 and 1991.
