Summary / Abstract (Note) | Populist nationalist movements have primarily been understood through their nationalist frames, even as the media and scholars alike frequently refer to ‘global’ trends related to populism. But there are in fact global dimensions to populist nationalism that deserve more conceptual and analytical attention. Three ways in which populist nationalism intersects with the global include cross-national imitation of populist tactics; the use of populist rhetorical strategies that move from the framing of local interests against national policies to framings of national interests against the global; and the potential for transnational populist nationalist movements to emerge.
