Summary / Abstract (Note) | The Movimiento 19 de Abril (M-19) combined the socialist discourse of the revolutionary left with explicit calls to Colombian nationalism. This paper will question how and why the M-19 framed its insurgency in explicitly Colombian Nationalist terminology, in particular by referencing the historic figure of Simón Bolívar. As well as how the M-19 balanced its ideological preferences with the norms and expectations of its supporters. The paper argues that the M-19 strategically fused socialism with Colombian nationalism to strengthen its appeal in urban areas, as a means to distinguish itself from the other armed groups and to maintain internal cohesion. |
