Summary / Abstract (Note) | The crisis in Ukraine has led to much speculation about both its causes and the means of resolving it. Some are raising historical parallels, questioning whether Russia will suffer the same fate in Ukraine as the Soviet Union did in Afghanistan. Others question the sanity of the Russian president. But the war has more complex origins. During the 1990s there were no issues between Russia and Ukraine. They co-operated in the breakup of the Soviet Union, and launched market economies and democracies that remained very immature. In the 21st century, however, relations deteriorated as Ukraine struggled to reconcile diverging pressures. |
