Title ProperUnited States and Asia in 2024
Other Title Informationevolving contours of cooperation and competition
LanguageENG

Summary / Abstract (Note)In 2024, the final year of the Biden administration, the United States pursued ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with allies and partners across the Indo-Pacific, in the context of continued global strategic competition between the US and the People’s Republic of China. Efforts to strengthen security cooperation were stronger than economic outreach, however, and elections and leadership transitions in multiple locations, including the US, raised questions about the extent to which domestic politics will inflect current patterns in the near future. The past year, in other words, saw both progress in the stated goals of American foreign policy in Asia, and the persistence of old challenges as well as the evolution or emergence of new ones.
