China-Pakistan strategic relationship: trade, investment, energy and infrastructure

Summary/Abstract
The traditional Sino-Pakistan friendship of 55 years now has a new objective - to improve the economic content of their relationship, which comprises trade, investment and energy co-operation within a bilateral framework. The result of this determination to implement the new economic agenda is visible in the quantum of Chinese investment in Pakistan. However, there are indications that the trade agenda may be too ambitious or needs a larger restructuring of the Pakistani economy that will take time since it requires implementation of policy changes combined with participation in these initiatives from the business community of Pakistan. While investment primarily benefits Pakistan, trade provides China access to a new market for its goods. It will eventually do the same for Pakistan. Energy co-operation will benefit China as it will gain access to energy supplies through Gwadar port, an alternate route to the one through the Malacca straits, and will serve to develop its western regions. Pakistan has in turn gained from the large-scale infrastructure development that has taken place in Gwadar and will continue to do so once future plans make headway

Japan's self-defense force: towards a normal military
/ Mathur, Arpita

Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication
2007.
Summary/Abstract
The Self-Defense Forces (SDF) are one of the variables of the distinctly pacifist security policy Japan has followed ever since the end of the war. Japan's ongoing 'normalisation' involves an enhancement of the role and functions of these forces. Although the SDF's role has considerably increased in the past decade, it cannot be characterised as Japan's remilitarisation because of strong domestic and external checks. The shift in the SDF's role has to be seen in the larger context of fundamental changes in regional security in East Asia and Tokyo's intent to broaden its regional and global security profile.

/ Mishra, Rajesh Kumar

Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication
2007.
Summary/Abstract
India is uniquely placed in the international security and political environment as it neither falls within the NPT 'definition' of 'nuclear weapon states' nor is it a country that can be ignored in any international arrangement without taking into account the reality of its being a state with nuclear weapons capability. At a time when proliferation challenges are assuming disturbing levels, this article seeks to examine the policy options available for India to strengthen the international nuclear non-proliferation regime

Summary/Abstract
The rise of a militant Islamist group calling itself Pakistani Taliban has drawn wider international attention in recent years. It has appeared as a serious internal security threat for the Pakistani state and as an external challenge for the Afghan government facing a resurgent Taliban in southern Afghanistan. This article seeks to trace the evolution of 'Pakistani Taliban' and to isolate and analyse its ideological moorings and its political aspirations. It also seeks to critically examine the strategy employed by the Pakistani state to deal with such local militancy and study the impact such a group will have on Pakistani society and polity
