In Britain the global financial crisis is aggravated by a dual political crisis: the Cabinet and the Parliament have found themselves in a quandary. Let me remind you: in 2001, after Tony Blair's second victory at the general elections the analysts deemed it necessary to remind him of his old promise to cede his post to Gordon Brown. The Economist surmised that Gordon Brown would reach premiership when economic growth had petered out. The forecast proved correct
