As part of the section on military fatalities in Iraq and Afghanistan, Olivier Grouille analyses the data from Bird and Fairweather's study, exploring the implication for both institutional and public perceptions of the IED threat. He emphasizes that IEDs are the insurgent's weapon of choice but argues that while a focus on force protection may be necessary, it will not be sufficient of success
