Summary / Abstract (Note)This article analyses the Nigerian elections of 1999, 2003 and 2007 with particular reference to the role and reports of the Independent National Election Commission and international election monitoring organizations. It considers the logistical difficulties of conducting elections in Nigeria and the cultural, religious and ethnic factors militating against democracy. It questions the motivations of the international community and the appropriateness of Western standards to the Nigerian situation
