Summary / Abstract (Note)The pomp and partying of Ghana's Independence Day in March 1957 obscured some messy politics. The triumphalist story, widely accepted outside Ghana, of a heroic Nkrumah and the Convention Peoples' Party eclipsed alternative stories from the North, the rural areas and those who opposed Nkrumah. This article also considers the ironies and iconography of Ghana's 50th anniversary celebrations.
