The Indian government survived a critical vote of confidence over a controversial nuclear deal with the US. Levy Mwanawasa, the Zambian president, died. Kenya's finance minister, a key ally of the president, resigned over the allegedly dubious sale of a state-owned hotel to Libya. The Nigerian president sacked military chiefs in a further distancing of the government from the previous regime.
