Summary / Abstract (Note)New Zealand and Russia established official relations in 1944 at the time when both were at war with Nazi Germany. But ties between the two countries go back much further. The first Russian to visit New Zealand did so in 1821, members of the first Russian Antarctic expedition led by Captain Bellingshausen.
