Summary / Abstract (Note) | As Lebanon's dramatic change of direction occurred, few doubted that its success depended, to a large extent, if not mainly, upon the support given by the US and France. However, Israel's voice was not absent among those welcoming Syria's departure from Lebanon. In fact, long before the murder of Rafik al-Hariri in February 2005, the Israeli Government had joined the efforts to weaken Syria's hold over the land of the Cedars The adoption of this new Israeli policy, which aimed to achieve the removal of the Syrian presence from Lebanon, marked a significant change in direction for Israel. Previously, for a very long period of time, Israel had tended to view Syria's political and military presence in Lebanon as a stabilizing factor, which would bring quiet to the Israeli-Lebanese border. |
