Summary / Abstract (Note) | This article assesses the rule of President Yahya Jammeh of The Gambia who came to power in 1994 following a military coup that overthrew the country's first president, Sir Dawda Jawara, and is now one of Africa's longer-serving political leaders. Following a description of key political developments since 1994, the article examines why Jammeh has won three presidential elections since 1996. It then assesses his government's record in terms of social and economic developments and human rights and considers its foreign policy stance, including its relations with the Commonwealth. The paper concludes by assessing Jammeh's future prospects. |
