Summary / Abstract (Note) | The African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, commonly known as the Treaty of Pelindaba, declares that the "African nuclear-weapon-free zone will constitute an important step towards strengthening the non-proliferation regime, promoting cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, promoting general and complete disarmament and enhancing regional and international peace and security".1 This article provides a brief historical background to the treaty and an update of developments in its implementation since its entry into force, including the First Conference of State Parties, in November 2010. |
