Summary / Abstract (Note)In their documentary ?lm The Women of Cyprus, ?lmmakers Vassiliki Katrivanou and Bushra Azzouz introduce audiences to the story of Cyprus and a handful of modem-day heroines ยป- a group Of Greek and Turkish Cypriot women who began to rede?ne their way of thinking in 2003. with a view to resolving the conflict that has split the island.
The ?lm became possible following several events that took place in 2003: First, checkpoints were removed and Cypriots could ?nally cross the border and visit all parts of their island, a right they had lost with the Turkish invasion of 1974. At about that time. a group of women began to get together in the hope of initiating dialogue and joining hands to hear the other side's narrative. When they crossed over and met, they were pleased to ?nd that the other side was "just like us," and for these women there was no going back to their separate existence. Their message is of hope, reconciliation and open borders. The third event was the visit to Cyprus of Vassiliki Katrivanou. who was born and raised in Athens, Greece. While in Cyprus. Katrivanou found herselfin conversation with the women who were already engaged in dialogue
