Title ProperWhy China is not a global power
LanguageENG
AuthorTan, Andrew T H
Summary / Abstract (Note)China's economic rise has prompted predictions that it will become a global power and supplant the US as the new global hegemon. However, Andrew T H Tan argues that, while China's influence and impact will certainly grow, it would have to overcome significant barriers to become a genuine global power. Among other constraints, China does not possess the soft-power attributes that would elicit a positive identification with it and lacks a clearly articulated foreign policy that would support a leading role on the international stage. The rising and uncontrolled nationalism is also becoming a serious constraint on the country's evolving international role.
