Summary / Abstract (Note)The Kuril Islands dispute between Japan and Russia has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty since the Second World War. Japan has invested a lot of political capital in sustaining its claims on the southernmost four islands of the chain. Russia on its part, sees these islands as necessary for the strategic defence of its mainland. Moreover, Japanā€˜s military alliance with America makes Moscow increasingly wary of parting with the islands.
