Summary / Abstract (Note) | Capitalism is a system of economic and social relations characterised by the dependence of the bulk of the population on the sale of their labour power for subsistence. Although wage labour and private ownership of the means of production have existed sporadically and in various forms over the millennia, capitalism is of relatively recent origin, making its first appearance in the English countryside some four to five hundred years ago. |
