Title ProperRepresenting New Zealand values and culture
LanguageENG
AuthorReddy, Dame Patsy
Summary / Abstract (Note)The governor-general's traditional role, as the monarch's representative in New Zealand, has focused on constitutional, ceremonial and community leadership domestically. But more recently an international role has emerged. Described as 'promotion of New Zealand's identity and sovereignty as an independent nation', it involves representing New Zealand values and culture to the wider world. The prime minister and the government of the day determine the nature of overseas travel by the governor-general, but over the past 18 months closed borders due to the Covid-19 pandemic have had a significant impact on the opportunities to fulfil the international aspects of the role.
