Summary / Abstract (Note) | A massive urban renewal project in Jeddah, the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia, has entailed the demolition of many historic quarters with substantial immigrant and working-class populations. Neighborhoods have been targeted with little warning or provision of compensation or alternative housing for many displaced residents. The project is intended to create modern new districts as part of a national economic agenda, but it risks erasing the unique cosmopolitan character of the Red Sea port city. |
