Summary / Abstract (Note) | Alister McIntosh's 23 years heading the foreign ministry were marked by a relentless quest for New Zealand's 'best and brightest' to secure the necessary quota of top calibre diplomats for the country's fledgling diplomatic service. It was also a considerable test to retain sufficient of those he had found, while winnowing out the weak performers. In the first decade of his tutelage, security vetting was a major challenge. McIntosh reflected in retirement that 1954 had been his hardest year, when he lost eight staff he could ill-afford to let go. |
