Summary/Abstract |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that the Presidency will be inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented and decisive in the direction of making it a ‘People’s G20’ for a post-pandemic world. In spite of some of the limitations, the founding of the G20 definitely signifies an end to the era when developed countries dominated global economic governance. It is expected that by raising their voices and building on their influence, emerging economies, the BRICS in particular, will be able to steer world economy. India’s presidency would surely give a new direction to the G 20 for ultimate betterment of the world community.

Summary/Abstract |
The world has witnessed many changes since the era of colonialism ended. Although most of the countries from Latin America, Asia and Africa achieved independence after the end of second world war, it was clearly observed how the global politics and international institutions remained biased towards the newly independent countries and were run by the powerful nations. This created a major rift in the world as it was divided into global north and south.

Summary/Abstract |
G20 played a crucial role until now in addressing the global financial crisis, the level of commitment towards tackling a wide range of current global issues remains uncertain. The G20’s rotating presidency system has resulted in numerous policy initiatives being introduced during leader’s summits, which often require subsequent presidencies to follow up on them. This approach does not provide adequate consistency, continuity, or peer pressure to ensure the implementation of relevant policy changes. As a result, the G20’s current format may be inadequate in delivering tangible outcomes for the issues at hand.

Summary/Abstract |
The G20 is a significant forum for discussing global economic and financial concerns among the world’s largest economies. The Asian financial crisis of 1999 marked its birth. The G20 was established so that finance ministers and central bank governors could address global economic and financial issues. Nonetheless, the 2008 financial crisis necessitated the introduction of G20 gatherings for heads of state. Since then, leaders of the G20 have convened regularly, making it the premier platform for economic cooperation. Since 2011, the G20 has held a summit annually, with a new country serving as host each time. On 1 December 2022, India took the G20 presidency for a year, and the heads of state and other delegates will tour around the country. During its G20 presidency, India can display its soft power to visiting delegations.Within the scope of this paper, four primary considerations will be highlighted.

Summary/Abstract |
G20 presidency is the litmus test of India’s international personality and clout. It has given an unprecedented opportunity to establish its credibility in tackling the fragmented global order. It has been made obvious, right in the beginning that G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues. It has largely been evolved into a leading platform for economic cooperation. However, as stated above this also is the stark reality that G20 cannot move forward in the direction of achieving its objectives if security issues are not addressed on the platform.

And the G20 presidency provides India with the opportunity to showcase the country’s potential whilst also giving equal weight to all the states. The Act East Policy, as well as various bilateral, regional, and multilateral agreements and engagements in South and Southeast Asia, has elevated the region’s profile. The B20 meetings held in various northern states have created new opportunities for the region that go beyond regional engagement and aspirations. The paper briefly discusses the imperatives and opportunities presented by the G20 meetings in the north-eastern states with emphasis on Manipur.
