Auditing COP28: Optimism and Pessimism / Gupta, Alok Kumar   Journal Article
Gupta, Alok Kumar Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Overall the COP28 presents a mixed outcome but not encouraging or one about which people across the globe may feel happy. The final agreement included loopholes, and deferred decisions on different significant issues. The Agreement also could be marked at relatively low levels of funding pledges compared to what is needed to make progress as the incidence of global warming increases. The outcomes of COP28 may be slow and less on ambitions, still such multilateral efforts and processes are necessary for making incremental steps in the right direction in future. COP28 was a major challenge before the oil producer countries as they are solely dependent upon the same.

Summary/Abstract As COP28 drew to a close in Dubai, it marked a pivotal moment in global climate negotiations, symbolising a unified commitment to shift away from all fossil fuels. India, playing a central role in shaping COP outcomes, skillfully navigated discussions, aligning its national priorities with the broader global need for climate action and opting for a transition from coal rather than a phased elimination. Despite India’s ongoing efforts in climate adaptation, projections indicate a substantial financial requirement of Rs 57 lakh crore for adaptation alone by 2030 in a “business as usual” scenario, emphasising the urgency for robust climate financing.
