21st AELM 2013: Constrained Governments and the rising need for market driven growth / Simandjuntak, Djisman S   Journal Article
Simandjuntak, Djisman S Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Aspiring to serve the world as inclusive and sustainable growth is perhaps the most attractive of all the messages and intents that the 21st APEC Economic Leaders` Meeting (21st AELM) in Bali spread through its lengthy Bali Declaration. Given European Union`s incapacitation in the wake of austere policies made necessary by structural government deficits and other growth depressors, including aging, sizeable expansionary impulses that can pull the world economy out of descending trend in the short run can only come from APEC economies. Even through the united states (US) and to a lesser extent Japan are tightly social security expenditure, increase taxes and or sell assets in order to get back to a necessary fiscal balance, APEC can count on China, Southeast Asia, Republic of Korea (ROK) , and Russia as sources of stimulatory impacts on the world economy.

Accepting austerity: the right way to cut defense / Williams, Cindy   Journal Article
Williams, Cindy Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract On March 1, 2013, the U.S. Department of Defense lost $37 billion overnight to sequestration. The cut marked the first wave of a series of planned cutbacks that will shrink future budgets across the federal government by about $1 trillion over nine years. The reductions had been set in motion back in 2011, when a special "super committee" established by the Budget Control Act (BCA) failed to reach a deficit-reduction agreement, triggering automatic cuts designed to punish both parties. Unlike other budget cuts, sequestration is implemented across the board, taking the same percentage bite out of every account. Except for the decision to spare the military personnel account that provides the pay for the United States' men and women in uniform, defense leaders had no choice about where to take the 2013 cuts. And so, with just seven months left in the fiscal year, sequestration abruptly erased about eight percent of the the Pentagon's budget for the year.

Allegories of Venice: Singapore's vague concept of a global city / Chan, Ying-Kit   Journal Article
Chan, Ying-Kit Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract This paper argues that although the state elites of Singapore use “Venice” as an image to legitimate the People's Action Party's continuous rule and unpopular immigration policies, the image has both empowered and constrained the state. To the state, Venice serves as a keyword that conjures up dynamism, progress, and continuity; to its critics, however, Venice signals the state's willingness to focus on the intangible elements of nationhood, namely culture and the arts. These critics use the ambiguities of the Venice rhetoric to legitimate their own appeals for change, especially after discovering that the “shared vision” of Venice is mainly in economic terms. By so doing, detractors of the state contest the centrality of economics in the making of modern-and future-Singapore, rendering the use of “Venice” as an image to promote the concept of a Global City problematic.

American economic power hasn't declined: it globalized summoning the data and taking globalization seriously / Starrs, Sean   Journal Article
Starrs, Sean Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract This paper argues that a fundamental failing in the debate on the decline of American economic power is not taking globalization seriously. With the rise of transnational corporations (TNCs), transnational modular production networks, and the globalization of corporate ownership, we can no longer give the same relevance to national accounts such as balance of trade and GDP in the twenty-first century as we did in the mid-twentieth. Rather, we must summon data on the TNCs themselves to encompass their transnational operations. This will reveal, for example, that despite the declining global share of United States GDP from 40% in 1960 to below a quarter from 2008 onward, American corporations continue to dominate sector after sector. In fact, in certain advanced sectors such as aerospace and software-even in financial services-American dominance has increased since 2008. There are no serious contenders, including China. By looking at the wrong data, many have failed to see that American economic power has not declined-it has globalized.

Analytical study of terrorism: taking stock / Sandler, Todd   Journal Article
Sandler, Todd Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract This article presents an eclectic review of the analytical study of terrorism that views all agents as rational decisionmakers. This analytical literature began in earnest with the seminal study of US skyjackings by William Landes in 1978. After 11 September 2001, the analytical literature on terrorism grew rapidly. Based on policy relevance, my survey article identifies five key areas of intense research interests. These include analyses of terrorist attack trends, the economic consequences of terrorism, the study of counterterrorism effectiveness, the causes of terrorism, and the relationship of terrorism and liberal democracies. New developments in the field focused on distinguishing key differences between domestic and transnational terrorism. Additionally, recent game-theoretic advances permitted more active agents and stages to the games. Other major developments involved the study of networked terrorists and the role of counterterrorism foreign aid. Fruitful future directions include using advanced econometric methods to discern the true impact of terrorism on growth, applying spatial econometrics to the study of terrorism, ascertaining the determinants of terrorist groups' longevity, and learning how to foster international counterterrorism cooperation.

Angell and Mahan: technology, globalization, and international security today / Quirk , James M   Article
Quirk , James M Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Norman Angell and Alfred Thayer Mahan were two of the leading thinkers on pre–World War I “interdependence,” offering competing lessons on the changes in technology, economics, and security. At different times during the twentieth century, each one’s ideas seemed to best explain global politics and strategy. This essay reconsiders their ideas in the current era of globalization and global threats.
