Summary/Abstract |
Five prevailing myths about India's nuclear posture should be dispelled, exposing its posture as no longer as minimalist as the conventional wisdom asserts with significant, underappreciated implications for safety, regional security, and crisis stability.

Summary/Abstract |
Atul Kumar traces the evolution of Indian foreign policy from the arguably impractical idealism of its early post-colonial years towards an increasingly pragmatic realpolitik, founded on the perception of national imperatives as a predominant power in Asia. Faced with an unstable and unpredictable Pakistan backed by both China and the US, India is no longer bound by its ideological and military alliance with the defunct USSR and finds itself at the heart of a troubled and strife-prone region in which it has few if any reliable friends, in a climate of escalating global rivalry for power and resources.

Summary/Abstract |
The Congress-led coalition battled through another difficult year with issues of governance continuing to cause difficulty for the government. The economy performed unevenly, with high rates of inflation and slower economic growth. Close relations were maintained with the U.S., but relations with China remained awkward. Pakistan and India made little headway on improving relations. Campaigning for the 2014 general election began midway through 2013.

Summary/Abstract |
A key ponderable that emerges while reviewing recent happenings is the fast progression of Japan-India relations. What are the reasons for this phenomenon?. The Japanese emperor's visit to India in November 2013 was the first ever such vision in history. January 2014 was the first time for a Japanese prime minister to grace the Indian Republic day parade as the chief guest.

Summary/Abstract |
With the deadline for the US withdrawal from Afghanistan getting closer, regional and extra-regional states have indicated pivoting their Afghan strategy. India, being an emerging power, holds much potential to contribute to the stabilisation and reconstruction of war-torn Afghanistan by developing strategic partnership with other stakeholders. For this, India's status in the regional and international system, its economic and military might and its strategy to reach beyond its traditional zone of influence warrant a systemic analysis of its Afghan strategy. The article traces the antecedents of India's current strategic and foreign policy in classical Indian strategic text Arthashstra and analyses India's present level of involvement in Afghanistan in the light of that discussion. An attempt is made in this paper to show how India's Afghan strategy is informed and influenced by its perception of allies, enemies and indifferent big powers. The paper also suggests some policy changes by critically assessing the broader context in which India operates today.

Summary/Abstract |
During the past few years, New Delhi has stepped up its engagement with the Central Asian Republics with the aim of building a long term partnership - both bilaterally and collectively under the frame work of newly pronounced 'Connect Central Asia' policy.
The 'Connect Central Asia' policy is based on pro-active political, economic, cultural and people-to-people engagement with the countries of Central Asian region. At present the South, Central and West Asian region is exposed to completely new set of challenges. These new developments make a case for India to evolve a calibrated and co-ordinated response in its engagement with the regional countries to further secure India's core national interests. It is in this context that present article attempts to examine and evaluate various facets of India's 'Connect Central Asia' policy.

Summary/Abstract |
The article documents India's involvement in the Korean crisis from 1950-1952. It argues that India's 'diplomatic entrepreneurism' allowed it to become the interlocutor, mediator and adjudicator, all rolled into one, helping India to create a space of manoeuvre for itself in the fast polarizing international system. Jawaharlal Nehru expectedly is the main protagonist in this tale, yet it also seeks to bring forth contributions of other Indian diplomats which have generally been buried under Nehru's weight, in studies on Indian foreign policy. Moreover, it responds to the call for a greater engagement with Indian diplomatic history, a field that is severely understudied.
