Aviation keeps focus on hot and high ops / Drwiega, Andrew   Journal Article
Drwiega, Andrew Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract The article reports on the Indian Air Force's (IAF) ways of dealing with hot and high environmental conditions. Hot and high refers to low air density caused by high temperatures and high geographic elevation which result in helicopters having difficulties generating lift. The IAF has started operating in such environments in 1984 when they launched an operation to secure the border in northern Kashmir. The IAF is reportedly planning to purchase the upgraded version of the Cheetah helicopter.

Indian military helicopter fleet / Sachdev, A K   Journal Article
Sachdev, A K Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract In terms of size, the Indian armed forces are amongst the largest in the world but in terms of equipment, they are lamentably lagging behind the leading edge of weapon systems and aircraft technology. In the area of military helicopters as well, India is forced to import most of the requirements from foreign vendors while the regulatory framework panders to HAL monopoly. Should the indigenous helicopter design and production capability be untethered from HAL and opened to private enterprise, there would be two advantages. Firstly, the delays and inefficiencies would disappear and secondly, the cost of leading edge technologies and products would reduce not just because of indigenous production, but also because of the possibility of export and economy of scale.

Overcoming helicopter force generation challenges for UN peacek / Sherman, Jake; Kugel, Alischa; Sinclair, Andrew   Journal Article
Sinclair, Andrew Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract UN peacekeeping missions are increasingly mandated to take on a range of complex tasks. Due to the dynamic, demanding, logistically challenging and time-sensitive nature of these operations, missions have become increasingly dependent on helicopters to effectively implement their mandates. Yet UN peacekeeping missions face a critical shortage of military helicopters. Resolution of the force generation challenges for helicopters requires a multifaceted strategy that addresses deficiencies in overall supply, clarifies administrative and procedural ambiguities, including tasking and command and control, and revisits reimbursement rates for member states.
