Summary/Abstract This article explores the development of tactical thought in the Royal Navy during the period leading up to the First World War, and concludes that the direction of tactical thinking and Admiralty construction policy contradict claims put forward by Jon T. Sumida that in 1912 Admiral Sir John Jellicoe developed a ‘technical-tactical synthesis’ that called for fighting at medium ranges (7,000–10,000 yards).

Possible Chinese naval deployment of a long-range land-attack cruise missile may be compared with the initial U.S. Navy deployment of Tomahawks aboard surface ships, including battleships, in the 1980s Chinese may plan to use their cruise missiles in the way the Tomahawks are used to hit particular precision targets from unexpected axes.

Summary/Abstract The article focuses on the detonation of a faulty projectile on the U.S. Ship Newport News that left 20 sailors dead and 36 injured on September 30, 1972. It is reported that at about 0100 in the night an eight-inch guns fired followed by the announcement ordering the entire crew to general quarters. Comments on a 8-inch projectile in the bore of the center gun of Turret Two that exploded prematurely, setting off several casings in the powder hoists are also included.
