Summary/Abstract |
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has been helping students to become more literate in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), empowering students to become innovators, inventors, self-reliant, and logical thinkers. As technologically proficient problem-solvers, they will be able to compete as skilled "knowledge workers" in the twenty-first century. The laboratory hopes these efforts will help foster development of a future professional workforce prepared in STEM fields that address sensors, power/propulsion/energy, advanced materials/manufacturing, human performance, and air systems. Achieving and sustaining world-class expertise in these technology areas is vitally important to the AFRL's science and technology mission. Its STEM efforts span the whole of its enterprise. The authors report on progress made through specific AFRL STEM-related initiatives in Ohio, New Mexico, and California.

Summary/Abstract |
This paper studies the critical role of the microscope in subject formation of early 1950s People’s Republic of China. The campaign against alleged germ warfare (xijun zhan 細菌戰) in 1952 politicised the action of seeing the enemy through the discourse of science. Widely used for science education and mass mobilisation for the campaign, the microscope was at once visual technology and an apparatus of power, magnifying hidden and invisible enemies that threatened the new regime. This paper argues that “seeing the enemy” was the hygienic practice of weisheng (衛生), which took on a new meaning of abjection in the early 1950s. By looking into news reports, visual materials, and science writing from this period, this paper proposes a transdisciplinary methodology for studying PRC history that brings together psychoanalysis, visual culture studies, and the history of science and technology.

Summary/Abstract |
Induced pluripotent stem cells are one of the hottest topics in medicine today. Expectations are rising for the use of iPS cells in regenerative medicine, and research is being carried out aggressively. Professor Yamanaka's team at Kyoto University led the world in successfully creating iPS cells in November 2007. He is now working to create a more open research environment like that in the United States and thinking about ways for Japan to get talented young people to pursue careers in science and technology

Summary/Abstract |
Antarctica is a crucial regulator of the world’s climate, and as environmental security permeates global security, using Antarctic science to better understand climate is becoming increasingly pressing. Although the Australian Government has recognised that climate change poses ‘a current and existential national security’ threat and has acknowledged Antarctica’s importance regarding the earth’s global climate system, the focus of Australia’s intelligence community pertaining to Antarctica currently remains restricted to upholding the military-security and diplomatic goals of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). This current focus aims to hedge against the possibility of conflict on, or over, the frozen continent via ‘working the ATS’, however, this paper argues that Antarctic climate science holds a greater capacity to deliver security outcomes for Australia. Antarctic climate science offers opportunities regarding intelligence for Antarctica, that is, securing Australia’s Antarctic interests, as well as regarding intelligence from Antarctica; by enhancing natural disaster preparedness, bolstering broader strategic planning, as well as furthering diplomacy and the legitimisation of Australia’s leadership on, and over, the frozen continent. It is recommended that the Commonwealth Government establish a climate intelligence working group to ensure the utility of climate science to security and intelligence is realised.

Summary/Abstract |
China’s emergence as a scientific power this century is impressive. Recent reforms promise to raise the country’s profile in scientific research even further. Even so, China’s illiberal political system complicates the country’s quest for scientific leadership, particularly as efforts to increase CCP control have intensified in recent years.
