Summary/Abstract |
This study systematically explores the factors that affect collective identity associations within the Alevi community in Turkey by employing the social identity approach and examining survey data collected through fieldwork. The results show that Kurdish Alevis express lower levels of attachment to their religious identity as compared to Turkish Alevis. The results also indicate that personal experiences of discrimination tend to increase one's prioritization of Alevi identity. Last, no significant differences are observed regarding group identity between Alevis who reside in urban areas and those who live in rural areas.

Summary/Abstract |
The paper examines the metaphors and dynamics of Atsabe Kemak group identity construction, with a strong emphasis on local cultural 'remembering' of Atsabe history vis-à-vis relations of power. The analysis utilizes the analytical frameworks of Foucault's notion of discourse and Bourdieu's concept of habitus. The secondary burial of a former chieftain highlights the dynamics of Atsabe Kemak responses to new nation-building processes and to international influences that have appeared during the United Nations' transitional administration.

Summary/Abstract |
Contestation and mutual infl uence between the state and civil society
go beyond formal institutional realms, and extend into the ideational
spheres of social labeling, public speech, and collective consciousness
building. Based on data from a three-year research project, this article
analyzes Chinese activists and nongovernmental organization (NGO)
practitioners’ preferences for group identity, and fi nds “gongyi zuzhi”
(public interest organization) to be the most popular social label. Th e
article thus argues that if there exists a collective sense of belonging
among activists and NGO practitioners in China’s civil society, the
discursive contour of this sense of belonging is most likely to be “for
public interest.” The article further maps out possible associations
between one’s NGO-related work experience and refl ections on group
identity. “Gongyi” as a shared social label may not be politically
inspiring to some, but it carries a straightforward message of “working
for the public good” and discursive potential for meaning making. Th is
fi nding suggests not only society’s embeddedness and activists’ pragmatism,
but also maturing collective consciousness and discursive
autonomy in China’s civil society

Summary/Abstract |
The recent and unresolved conflict in Côte d'Ivoire has received little attention in the English-speaking world. Where it is discussed, the instrumentalist view of ethnic conflict predominates. This is a linear and structural argument. It examines how pre-given ethnic groups gained political voice in clashes over control of economic resources, and were subsequently manipulated by political elites with personal agendas. This paper questions the coherence of group identity and instead emphasises the agency of individuals. It argues that the meaning of ethnic identity was transformed as social and economic grievances led to conflict between political groupings. This approach accords individual Ivoirians more responsibility for determining the boundaries of ethnic and nationalist exclusion, and for participating in the ensuing violent conflict.

Summary/Abstract |
The recent renaissance of uneven and combined development (UCD) has generally followed Justin Rosenberg’s formulation of the ‘international’, conceived as the inter-societal dimension of sociohistorical development. But Rosenberg’s ‘international’ rests on the conflation of distinct concepts, thus occluding other consequential registers of multiplicity. This paper (1) disentangles the concepts ‘social’, ‘societal’ and ‘political’; (2) demonstrates, using recent archaeological research, that complex social definedness preceded the sedentarisation of human groups; and (3) argues that social multiplicity constitutes a distinct dimension of causality that is interrelated with but irreducible to the territorial logics of societal and political multiplicity. In order to do this, it examines the role of the social (as non-territorial group identification) in the rise of Hellenic nationalism in colonial Cyprus. The paper concludes by suggesting a new path for UCD research in order to explore the full significance of multiplicity for IR theory, thus moving further out of the ‘prison of Political Science’.
