Europe should and can make the difference / Liel, Alon   Article
Liel, Alon Article

Summary/Abstract There are moments in a retired diplomat’s life when he has to give up the diplomatic protocol and say publicly, loud and clear, what is going on in his mind. This period defines such a moment. After three decades of diplomatic service on behalf of the State of Israel, in addition to years of military service in defense of the state, there is no doubt in my mind that I should now speak up.

Give Peace a Chance – Free Marwan Barghouti / Liel, Alon   Journal Article
Liel, Alon Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Marwan Barghouti has already spent 27 years in an Israeli prison and in exile, the exact number of years that Nelson Mandela spent in a South African prison. In my view, these 10,000 days in prison and in exile have transformed Barghouti into the ultimate leader of the Palestinian people. At this point, he is the only one who can extricate us from the quagmire we are in.

Israeli gas exports as a vehicle for enhancing regional cooperation / Liel, Alon; Mor, Amit   Article
Liel, Alon Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract During the last five years Israel was blessed with significant natural gas discoveries in the deep water of its Mediterranean coast. The Tamar and Leviathan gas fields were the largest discovered in the world in the past decade. The use of this gas will benefit Israel directly to the tune of US$6 billion per annum. In addition to the potential boost to Israel’s economy, it gives the country a unique opportunity to meaningfully change its economic and energy relations with the region — as long as politics do not stand in the way.

Just solution will last, not the feasible / Liel, Alon   Journal Article
Liel, Alon Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article offers a response to Alon Ben-Meir's (2022) proposal for an Israeli-Palestinian-Jordanian Confederation from the perspective of a former Israeli diplomat whose roles included Director General of the Foreign Ministry of Israel and Israel's ambassador to South Africa. A long-time champion of a campaign to promote the recognition of a Palestinian state by European governments, in this piece Ambassador (ret.) Dr. Liel unpacks his personal and professional reasoning as to why he remains wary and hesitant of confederative solutions even if, on the face of it, they may be practically attainable.

Principles for solving the refugee problem / Liel, Alon   Journal Article
Liel, Alon Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2008-09.
Summary/Abstract For 40 years we did not speak about it. It did not exist. It was not an issue. It was not only that former Prime Minister Golda Meir said there was no Palestinian people; nobody dared to speak about the issue of refugees returning, and no one admitted that they would be allowed to come back to a state of Palestine. First of all, there is no way that the issue of refugees will not be an integral part of the final status agreement. In fact, the final status talks that started under then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak in 1999 included the refugee issue on the agenda.

Trump’s “Deal of the Century” Is Modeled on South African Apartheid / Liel, Alon   Journal Article
Liel, Alon Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The “Deal of the Century,” which was publicly released in January 2020, changes the reality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict even if the plan itself is never implemented. The likelihood that a future Israeli leader will be able to offer the Israeli public less than the 30% of the West Bank so generously granted to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu by President Donald J. Trump appears unrealistic. Similarly, the prospect that any Palestinian leader will accept the plan seems out of the question. As a result, the plan is not likely to lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state despite its use of the term. Moreover, the “Deal of the Century” could prove to be the diplomatic death blow to the two-state solution. Even if it were to be partially implemented, it will be coming 40 years after the South African model.

Turkish model and the Arab Spring / Liel, Alon   Journal Article
Liel, Alon Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract As the outcomes of the Arab Spring of 2011 take on more clarity, particularly in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, two central forces appear to be leaving their impression on the emerging regimes: Islam on the one hand and democracy and liberalization on the other. Religion is definitely in fashion in the Middle East, but democracy and modernization are also influencing the area, mainly through the revolution in communication. Clearly there is no way they can be ignored or negated. Throughout the Muslim world, Islam is perceived as an element that educates, unifies and preserves tradition, whereas democracy-modernization is seen as the means to improving, developing and above all creating livelihoods.
