Power and the ascendance of new economic policy ideas: lessons from the 1980s crisis in Israel / Mandelkern, Ronen; Shalev, Michael   Journal Article
Mandelkern, Ronen Journal Article

Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract Recent explanations of transformations of macroeconomic policy under crisis conditions spotlight the intrinsic properties of ideas and the persuasiveness with which they are marketed. Bridging the divide between power and discourse approaches, this article reveals the causal role played by the power resources of expert ideational entrepreneurs, conditional on the political conjuncture in which they operate. The authors exploit a fortuitous natural experiment from the early 1980s, when the Israeli economy spiraled into hyperinflation. Two similar proposals for economic stabilization and reform were offered by different teams of economists, less than two years apart. While the government rejected the dollarization plan, its authorization of the stabilization plan inaugurated a new political-economic regime. This case, in which similar programs were advocated by different ideational entrepreneurs in a largely stable institutional and economic context, makes it possible to pinpoint why radically new ideas succeed or fail. Previously underutilized analytical tools are employed to conceptualize the power of idea carriers, at both the individual and the group level.

Social networks and the organisation of big business groups in / Chan, Kim Ling   Journal Article
Chan, Kim Ling Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Personal ties are generally regarded as important to big business growth in Malaysia, particularly after the New Economic Policy (NEP) in the 1990s. Common types are informal ones established between multi-ethnic big business people and Malay key state and political leaders. Other types of ties, company directorship links and informal ties, are seldom studied especially those between the business people and former state bureaucrats and corporate professionals. Thus, by conceptualising the directorship links and informal personal ties as social networks, the author conducted a sociological analysis of some intra- and inter-ethnic directorship links and ties established by four prominent big businessmen after the NEP in the 1990s. This article reports the main finding on the links and ties becoming a common organisational mechanism of business groups owned and controlled by the businessmen, besides providing access to the state. Therefore, another understanding of inter- and intra-ethnic personal ties in big business growth, especially after the NEP is achieved.

We need a new economic policy / Oganesyan, A   Journal Article
Oganesyan, A Journal Article

Summary/Abstract ITIS a great honor for me to be here today. I am not a professional economist. But the walls of this building are associated with finding solutions to problems related to the national economy and our future development. This reminds me of my student days, when I studied at Moscow State University's Faculty of Journalism, which was on Mokhovaya Street, while the Faculty of Economics was located in what was known as the "glass house" - the humanities building on Vorobyovy Gory. My fellow students and I were under the impression that economics was an exact science, and we could not figure out what future economists were doing in that building.
