Energy intensity and its determinants in China's regional econo / Wu, Yanrui   Journal Article
Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This paper contributes to the existing literature as well as policy debates by examining energy intensity and its determinants in China's regional economies. The analysis is based on a comprehensive database of China's regional energy balance constructed for this project. Through its focus on regional China, this study extends the existing literature, which mainly covers nationwide studies. It is found in this paper that energy intensity declined substantially in China. The main contributing factor is the improvement in energy efficiency. Changes in the economic structure have so far affected energy intensity modestly. Thus there is considerable scope to reduce energy intensity through the structural transformation of the Chinese economy in the future.

Environmental efficiency and the optimal size of Chinese cities / Wang, Bing; Wu, Jianxin ; Wu, Yanrui   Journal Article
Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The spatial distribution of population and economic activities has important impacts on both economic growth and the environment. This paper uses a slack-based measure to estimate the total factor environmental efficiency (TFEE) of 286 Chinese prefectural-and-above cities for the period 2002–2013. In particular, the relationship between city size and TFEE is investigated. The findings also show an inverted U-shaped relationship between TFEE and city size, which implies an optimal city size of 16.68 million residents in China. According to this estimate, most Chinese cities may be undersized due to the migration restrictions of the hukou registration system and, hence, suffer from great environmental efficiency losses. The estimated low average TFEE value of Chinese cities also suggests the large potential for efficiency improvement. Thus, government policies should focus on relaxing migration restrictions and encouraging the development of large cities.

Governance and Export Performance in Vietnam / Nguyen, Son Thanh ; Wu, Yanrui   Journal Article
Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Since Đổi Mới in 1986, Vietnam has implemented a comprehensive economic renovation programme, including governance reform. As a result, the country has experienced impressive growth, mainly fuelled by rapid export expansion. This paper aims to examine the correlation between Vietnam’s export efficiency and bilateral-specific governance performance indicator during the 1996–2014 period. The results show that Vietnam’s export efficiency is positively correlated with the bilateral governance indicator and regional trade agreements, but negatively correlated with tariffs in the importing countries. The performance of Vietnam’s export efficiency also displays an overall increasing trend, with some fluctuation before 2005 and gradual rise afterwards. The country achieved high efficiency in terms of exports to all major trading partners—with the exception of China. At the disaggregated level, export efficiency in electronic equipment is very low, suggesting that there remains large unrealized export potential in this product category. Overall, these results indicate that there is plenty of room for Vietnam’s exports to grow in the future if the country can improve its efficiency in particular export products and/or markets.

Impacts of structural transformation and industrial upgrading on regional inequality in China / Cheong, Tsun Se; Wu, Yanrui   Article
Wu, Yanrui Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract China has achieved unprecedented success in economic growth since the initiation of economic reforms. The high growth could partly be attributed to the successes in structural transformation of the economy and industrial upgrading of the manufacturing sector toward high value-added products. However, regional inequality in China has increased considerably behind the scenes. In order to have sustainable economic growth, it is thus crucial to investigate the impacts of both structural transformation and industrial upgrading on regional inequality. This paper contributes to the literature by employing a database compiled at the county-level. Decompositions are performed for different spatial groupings so as to provide a clear view of evolution of regional inequality. In addition, the contributions of the major industries to inequality in industrialization are examined by using another database of value-added compiled at the provincial level. The results may have important policy implications for the formulation of a comprehensive and coherent strategy in managing inequality while promoting structural transformation and industrial upgrading.

Is there a gender gap in child nutritional outcomes in rural China? / Ren, Weiwei; Rammohan, Anu ; Wu, Yanrui   Article
Wu, Yanrui Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In this paper, we use data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) to examine if there are any gender differences in child anthropometric outcomes among rural Chinese children, explicitly taking into account the role of China's family planning policies. Our analysis shows that although there have been improvements in the child anthropometric measures height-for-age and weight-for-age over the last two decades, children, particularly girls from non-one child households have adverse nutritional outcomes. These gender differences persist in two-child households, where boys have better height-for-age outcomes when their sibling is a male rather than a female. Our decomposition model finds that there is a large unexplained component, which may be attributed to gender discrimination against the girl child.

Propensity, intensity and persistence of r&d spending in Chinese firms / Wu, Yanrui   Journal Article
Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article contributes to the understanding of innovative behaviour in China’s large and medium-sized firms and hence the role of Chinese firms in innovation. The empirical analyses are based on firm-level survey data. Innovation has important implications not only for the transformation of the Chinese economy but also for the rest of the world as Chinese firms become increasingly active internationally. Specifically, this article explores the factors underlying the propensity, intensity and persistence of research and development (R&D) spending in Chinese firms.

Regional economic growth and spillover effects: an analysis of China's pan pearl river delta area / Chen, Yu; Wu, Yanrui   Journal Article
Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The Pan Pearl River Delta (PPRD) Regional Co-operation Framework Agreement was signed in 2004. It aims to bring prosperity through partnership among nine Chinese Mainland provinces and China's two special administrative regions. In this paper, we use a dynamic panel data model to examine the economic growth of the PPRD economies from 1985 to 2009. Our analysis confirms the existence of regional growth spillover effects in the PPRD area. Our results also show that economic growth spillover effects of non-PPRD regions on the PPRD regions are greater than those among the PPRD members themselves. These findings imply that economic integration between Chinese provinces has generated considerable spillover effects on regional growth. However, the anticipated benefits of the implementation of the PPRD agreement have not been realized thus far. Therefore, greater effort should be made to promote further economic integration among these members so that their local economies can benefit from the positive spillover effects.

Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract A growing awareness of environmental quality has placed increased pressure on China to improve environmental protection and regulations in the country. How have the regional economies in the country performed in terms of environmental efficiency? The answer to this question is yet to be explored in the case of China. The objective of this paper is to present a quantitative analysis of environmental performance in China's regional economies and to examine the determinants of regional variation in performance. The findings are used to draw policy implications for environmental protection and are helpful in the discussion of China's future sustainable development.

Role of productivity in China's growth: new estimates / Wu, Yanrui   Journal Article
Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2008.
Summary/Abstract The impressive growth of the Chinese economy in the past three decades has attracted a lot of attention and hence the research interest of many scholars and policy makers. One of the focuses in the literature is the role of productivity in China's economic growth. This paper aims to revisit the debate about the role of productivity in China's growth, to provide an updated estimate of productivity growth and hence to make a contribution to the understanding of China's economic growth in recent years. Its objective is to propose and apply a growth accounting technique to assess economic performance in China, in particular the role of technological progress in China's recent growth. The findings about the latter may have important policy implications for the sustainability of China's economic growth in the future

Total factor productivity growth in China: a review / Wu, Yanrui   Journal Article
Wu, Yanrui Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract The debate on the role of total factor productivity (TFP) in China's rapid economic growth has led to the emergence of a large pool of papers on this topic. There is however hardly any consensus in the literature. This paper surveys 74 studies published from the 1990s onwards and employs meta-analysis to investigate whether the empirical findings are systematically affected by the choice of methods, selection of samples, and objectives of individual studies. Insights gained are used to draw implications for further studies.
