Commonwealth at 60 / Marshall, Peter   Journal Article
Marshall, Peter Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract The London Declaration of 26 April 1949, made by Commonwealth Prime Ministers, was an act of statesmanship of rare insight and imagination, as was its approval by King George VI. It paved the way for the emergence of a voluntary forward- and outward-looking association of sovereign, independent governments and peoples, alive to their common values and traditions, and conscious of the contribution they can together bring to making the world a better place. The Commonwealth is an international asset as well as a boon to its members.

How goes it with Britannia? / Marshall, Peter   Journal Article
Marshall, Peter Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract Britain's international involvement has not been diminished by the loss of Empire; but it has altered drastically, in response both to reduced circumstances and to fundamental changes in world conditions. The transition has been made less difficult by the moderation and good sense of Commonwealth partners. It cannot be said to be complete until Britain has found a more satisfactory basis for a productive role within the enlarged EU, an indispensable element in the management of global interdependence. Among the arguments advanced in this article is that Britain's international involvement is not a matter of external policies and priorities alone. It is a function of the soundness of its economy and the strength of its national cohesion.

Queen's diamond jubilee: giving thanks and looking forward / Marshall, Peter   Journal Article
Marshall, Peter Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The Queen's Diamond Jubilee occasions a recognition of her unique contribution to the development of the Commonwealth, especially the pervasive theme of service. The author also reflects on the role of faith in a multicultural and perhaps increasingly secular society. The Jubilee is, he argues, an occasion to look forward as well as back with clear heads and warm hearts.
