From anthropology to human geography: human terrain and the evolution of operational sociocultural understanding / Medina, Richard M   Article
Medina, Richard M Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Human terrain is a complicated term. It has been plagued with controversy in recent years stemming from US Army implementations in the Middle East. This paper reviews the history of human terrain in three forms: as a human behavioral concept, a conflict based application, and a multidisciplinary area of research. It investigates the history of the term and its evolution from anthropological foundations to human geography and geospatial intelligence. Recommendations are given and practices are suggested to gain knowledge and understanding of people that can assist in helping in hazardous situations and avoiding conflict.

Geographical contributions to understanding contemporary Islam: current trends and future directions / Hopkins, Peter   Journal Article
Hopkins, Peter Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract In recent years, geographers have been giving increasing attention to religion- and Islam in particular-yet such work is rarely referred to within the broader social science literature about Islam and Muslims. This paper seeks to promote interdisciplinary dialogue, discussion and debate by highlighting the contributions that human geographers are making to understanding of contemporary Islam. In particular, I draw upon research within urban, social, cultural and feminist geographies to review current trends within geographical scholarship about Muslims individuals and communities. I then use this paper to suggest ways in which interdisciplinary research-in collaboration with human geographers-might seek to advance contemporary understanding of the social and spatial experences of Muslim families and communities.

On the interface: the finnish geopolitical tradition in human geography and in IR / Moisio, Sami   Journal Article
Moisio, Sami Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract Geopolitical writing has been more extensive in Finland than in any other Nordic country in recent years. This rejoinder article is a contextualized reading of the development of Finnish geopolitics within both Finnish Human Geography and International Relations academia. It seeks to diversify an argument propounded by Ola Tunander, who scrutinized recent developments in Nordic geopolitical scholarship. Tunander gave some interesting evidence of how a few critical scholars practising geopolitics were able to have a direct impact on political events in Europe in the 1990s and how they challenged the 'US victory school' characterized by realist geopolitics. This rejoinder article suggests that the rise of Finnish geopolitics in the 1990s had surprisingly little to do with its policy relevance to region-building or otherwise shaping the political landscape in the European North. The rise of Finnish geopolitics should rather be regarded as an academic process that was inspired by the advances made in Anglo-American critical political geography. While interdisciplinary geopolitical scholarship made a promising start in Finland in the 1990s, recent developments give less reason for optimism. Some challenges for future geopolitical scholarship are also discussed.
