Al Qaeda’s post–9/11 organizational structure and strategy: the role of Islamist regional affiliates / Celso, Anthony N   Journal Article
Celso, Anthony N Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The political transformations under way in the Arab world and the killing of Osama bin Laden raise serious questions about al Qaeda's long-term viability. The secular-liberal Arab Spring protest movement appears to be winning the war of ideas over al Qaeda's violent religious fundamentalism. Civil disobedience campaigns in Tunisia and Egypt succeeded in forcing regime change in ways that a decade of al Qaeda terror attacks failed to accomplish. While it is too soon to write al Qaeda's obituary, its erosion came well before the death of its historic leader. This essay examines al Qaeda's post-9/11 evolution, its strategy, and its steady fragmentation. Since the destruction of its Taliban Afghan sanctuary, al Qaeda has been through many mutations, none of which, over time, has been successful. This essay argues that al Qaeda's failures in Iraq contributed substantially to the organization's decline.

Bringing Social Movements into the Inclusion-Moderation Thesis : the Influence of Religious Fundamentalism in Indonesia and South Korea / Jung, Eunsook   Journal Article
Jung, Eunsook Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Many scholars argue that democracy tames religious fundamentalism. This inclusion-moderation theory holds that when radical religious movements are incorporated in the democratic system, they have incentives to adhere to institutional frameworks to influence politics and access power. But despite these claims, we have witnessed a growing influence of religious fundamentalism in Asian democratic politics, with immoderation becoming prominent. Why have religious fundamentalist movements become influential in various democracies in Asia? How have they shaped policies? Using a most-different-systems approach, I investigate religious fundamentalism in two dissimilar democracies: Islamic fundamentalism in Indonesia and Christian fundamentalism in South Korea. In both cases, I argue that religious fundamentalist movements facilitate immoderate politics through strong mobilization capacity, agenda-setting power, and framing. The study contributes to the inclusion-moderation literature through its discussion of religious fundamentalism and its cross-religious comparison.

Frameworks for conceptualising terrorism / Schmide, Alex P Summer 2004  Journal Article
Schmide, Alex P Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication Summer 2004.
Summary/Abstract Terrorism has been situated—and thereby implicitly also defined—in various contexts such as crime, politics, war, propaganda and religion. Depending on which framework one chooses, certain aspects of terrorism get exposed while others are placed ‘outside the picture’ if only one framework is utilised. In this article five conceptual lenses are utilised: 1. terrorism as/and crime; 2. terrorism as/and politics; 3. terrorism as/and warfare; 4. terrorism as/and communication; and 5. terrorism as/and religious fundamentalism.

Global quest and regional reversal: rising India and South Asia / Basrur, Rajesh M   Journal Article
Basrur, Rajesh M Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract The end of the Cold War coincided with a significant change in India's relationship with the rest of the world. The somnolent elephant awoke to energize itself by liberalizing its economy and quickly emerged as a potential major power in global politics. From the standpoint of its neighbours in South Asia, there might well be cause for anxiety. India has long been viewed as a hegemonic power in the region. Do the strengthening sinews of the regional 'hegemon' bode ill for them? The article argues that India was a limited hegemon in the past, but that, in the contemporary era, while its economic and military power are growing significantly, it is actually becoming less hegemonic in its orientation towards its neighbours. In contrast with its strategic behaviour in the 1980s, it has now adopted a less interventionist relationship with its neighbours and its strategic gaze is focused beyond South Asia to the global setting as it pursues the status of a world power.

India’s look west policy and the Syrian conundrum / Chakrabarti, Sukalpa   Journal Article
Chakrabarti, Sukalpa Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract India shares historic ties with the Arab and Islamic world that cut across the spheres of culture, economy and politics. Described variously as our "extended" and "proximate" neighborhood in the diplomatic circles, the region is important for obvious strategic reasons in the fields of energy, trade, business, politics and security. The current upheaval in West Asia naturally has serious implications for India's strategic interests in the region. The unfolding of events bear the ominous possibility of a re-enactment of the Cold War politics with a vicious sectarian twist rooted in religious fundamentalism. Syria has become the current epicenter of a geopolitical showdown in the region with USA and Russia having locked horns, and the UN content to sit on the side-lines. This article would take a close look at the factors affecting and influencing India's role in Syria within the larger context of her West Asian foreign policy. It is recommended that India leads a collective diplomacy of the South to nurture and preserve a forward looking development agenda in West Asia.

Radical Islam and terrorism: a discourse / Panda, Snehalata   Journal Article
Panda, Snehalata Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Widespread rampage with bestial brutality has characterized terrorism in the past couple of years. If religious fundamentalism is the motivating factor for violence then any religious group can be identified as radical for using inhuman methods to achieve their goal or retaliate with inordinate force. But the debate veers round the phrase “Radical Islam”. Realignments to counter the menace are surprisingly unusual reversing the earlier order reminiscent of the events preceding the global wars.
