Summary/Abstract |
Regional disparities within China are now an important policy question. Recently the three provinces of the north-east region have been identified as priority areas for regional development, along with the Western part of the country. The north-east is the old industrial heartland of the country and its economy is based around heavy industry, mineral extraction and state owned enterprises. This paper uses a unique database on medium and large-scale enterprises to establish how far enterprise performance in the north-east differs from the national average and the reasons for any such differences. It finds that even allowing for industrial structure and ownership, performance in the north-east is significantly below that in the rest of the country. This is attributed to aspects of the investment climate in the region.

Summary/Abstract |
The paper examines the issue of efficiently managing federal budget investment in the production of new weapons depending on the effectiveness of relevant enterprises within the defense industry complex. The efficiency of arms production finds specific numerical expression in an interconnected system of indicators that characterize the degree of effectiveness in the use of major production elements.

Summary/Abstract |
Industrial action in export processing zones challenges the conventions of labour protest. Labour relations in domestic and foreign direct investment enterprises in industrial parks and export processing zones in Ho Chi Minh City were researched in 2018, with findings that divide into two areas of interest: (a) the ways ‘innovation’ in the economy has affected changes for the subjects involved in labour relations; (b) with strikes being a manifestation of conflict in labour relations, after a period of sharp increase (2011), there has been a decreasing number in recent years, but with changing characteristics. In particular, when a strike occurs now, the trade union which used to be the unique legal representative of all Vietnamese employees is less often favoured, and others are chosen by the employees to negotiate with the business owner. This trend will perhaps be formalized as Vietnam implements international labour–trade union commitments recently adopted.

Summary/Abstract |
The book under review is an attempt to delineate primarily the latest trends in the development of TNC. One of the most important new trends is the rapid growth of especially big corporations which are not merely becoming the more influential actors in world economy, but are increasingly claiming for themselves the decisive position in world politics and setting the tone for the entire political and cultural life on the global, regional and national levels.
Company reports, stock exchange bulletins, and appraisals made by many teams of researchers in particular by those of Fortune magazine, that have been published regularly since 1954 as well as ratings of 500 biggest companies around the world make it possible to contend that the impact of especially large TNC has been steadily growing between the end of the 20th century and at the start of the 21st century.
