Contextualizing radicalization: the emergence of the "Sauerland-group" from radical networks and the Salafist movement / Malthaner, Stefan   Journal Article
Malthaner, Stefan Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract This article proposes an analytical perspective on jihadist radicalization that focuses on the immediate social environment from which clandestine violent groups emerge, to which they remain socially and symbolically connected, and from which they receive some degree of support. Based on a detailed analysis of the "Sauerland-Group" it traces relational dynamics shaping individual pathways as well as processes of group formation within local Salafist milieus, the wider Salafist movement, and radical jihadist networks. It argues that one characteristic feature of "homegrown" jihadist groups is their simultaneous connection to and embeddedness in various different social contexts as well as the fluid, ad-hoc character of the clandestine group and its ambivalent relation with its supportive social environment

Useful Knowledge: Snouck Hurgronje and Islamic Insurgency in Aceh / McFate, Montgomery   Journal Article
Mcfate, Montgomery Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1858-1936), a Dutch scholar of Islam, served as a “military anthropologist” during the Aceh war in the Dutch East Indies. The Acehnese fighters viewed their anti-colonial struggle against the Dutch as a jihad, construing themselves religious martyrs fighting “infidel invaders,” and carrying out suicide attacks with a machete or dagger. To combat this insurgency Snouck Hurgronje, one of the first Westerners to visit Mecca and author of many books on Islam, developed the so-called “Aceh method,” which became the basis of modern Dutch counterinsurgency strategy. This article addresses the question: what can we learn from the life and times of Snouck Hurgronje?
