Summary/Abstract A "POLITICAL TSUNAMI," an "existential crisis" and "the not so United Kingdom" are several of the many assessments the British media used to comment on the results of the June 23, 2016 EU referendum. The nation was invited to give a simple and unequivocal answer to a far from simple and far from unequivocal question very much like the one addressed to Greek philosopher Menedemus in the 3rd century B.C. whether "he had left off beating his father."

Britain: shoplifting or looting? criminality or politics? / Ananieva, E   Journal Article

Summary/Abstract BROKEN GLASS has been already removed but the August riots in Britain left a "broken society" behind them: an emergency session of the Commons; a prime minister promising to track down and to punish wrongdoers; the leader of the opposition pledging to stand shoulder to shoulder with him. It was as if the country was at war.1 Politicians and analysts tried to go to the roots, to identify the causes and suggest remedies: there was no shortage of explanations ranging from "rap music which glorifies violence and loathing of authority" to "no father at home" to get from him "a positive sense of masculinity," and the mortgage crisis.

Britain in the turbulence zone / Ananieva, E   Journal Article

Summary/Abstract THE GENERAL ELECTION in Britain was drawing a close media attention since it was out of the ordinary. Indeed, news was coming in thick and fast. At the same time, expectations that the leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, would enter Number 10 the next day the votes were counted, on Friday, May 7 proved wrong. Which of the events were expected and which were fortuitous? As always, the devil is in the details, which we are going to go into to dig up background information. You will recall that Gordon Brown took over as leader of the Labour Party in late June 2007. The impression was, after Tony Blair's resignation, that, lacking the charisma of his predecessor, but winning a solid reputation during ten years in the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown would be able to help Labour to find their second wind.

Summary/Abstract THE EU REFERENDUM exposed a deep-cutting split in British society along the regional, age, social, educational, and, on the whole, class lines (the latter forgotten in the years of economic prosperity of postindustrial society).1 David Cameron organized the referendum in a hope to keep the Conservative Party united, to achieve reconciliation on the nationwide scale and bury the issue for at least another generation. The referendum, however, revealed the strengthening and so far latent trends of the last twenty years, which cropped up as the consistently mounting success of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) at the local, parliamentary and European parliamentary elections. In 2015, the "unfair" majority system left UKIP with one seat in the Commons (the system of proportional representation would have brought over 60 UKIP deputies to Westminster that corresponded to 12.6% of the gained votes).2

Summary/Abstract ON NOVEMBER 22-23, 2012, the extraordinary EU summit met in Brussels to discuss the EU budget despite the rumors that the UK might veto its decisions thus making the summit useless and even cancel it. The Brussels summit convened to discuss the next long-term budget for 2014-2020, the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) failed to deliver. Normally, the European Union needs two summits to reach a budget agreement. This time, President of the European Council (the EU highest political body consisting of heads of state and government of the member-states) Herman Van Rompuy should be ready with a new draft MFF by February 2013, the time of the next budget summit.
