Democratic recession and the changing contours of civil society / Chazan, Naomi   Journal Article
Chazan, Naomi Journal Article

Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Civil society in Israel has emerged not only as the key victim of the democratic recession currently engulfing the country, but also as the main source of its democratic promise. There is a direct correlation between the intensified efforts of neo-nationalist groups to curtail civil society and its increased centrality as the locus of the ongoing struggle for the assurance of a just, egalitarian and pluralistic Israel. This essay briefly surveys the emergence of civil society in Israel and its characteristics; it then analyzes recent attacks on civil society organizations and consequent shifts in its structure and activities. On this basis it discusses some of the implications of Israel's present democratic crisis and seeks to reassess the outlook for democratic durability in the country. The main contention of this analysis is that there is a close connection between the vibrancy of Israeli civil society and its democratic resilience. Today, Israel's reactivated civic sector stands as the last bastion between an ultra-nationalist takeover and democratic survival.

Gender, power and politics in Israel: translating political representation into meaningful empowerment for women. / Chazan, Naomi   Journal Article
Chazan, Naomi Journal Article

Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract The story of women, politics and power in Israel is fraught with anomalies. Women have traditionally been active participants in the public sphere, but their power has been consistently constrained. They have suffered from systematic underrepresentation, but as their number in the formal political arena has grown, their substantive impact has waned. And while they have scored significant achievements, gender inequality endures. Never have these inherent contradictions been more apparent than during the past decade, when the rising political clout of women has not been translated into sustained power, their increased political presence into effective influence, or their tangible legislative gains into significant socioeconomic progress. These trends highlight not only the ongoing impact of chauvinistic, militaristic and particularistic strains on Israeli politics in general and the depth of the recent move to the right in particular, but also the innovative potential of gender-rooted alternatives

Israel, Palestine, and UNSC Resolution 1325: Then and Now / Chazan, Naomi   Journal Article
Chazan, Naomi Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract For Israeli and Palestinian women activists, the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on October 31, 2000, was the culmination of intense efforts to introduce gender directly into the promotion of peace, the protection of civilians (especially women and children) in protracted conflicts, and the prevention of further escalation. Twenty years later, this landmark resolution still stands as a beacon in the dual struggle against militarism and patriarchy, although its goals have yet to be realized. How has 1325 been used in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation during the past 20 years? Why have efforts to advance its core precepts largely faltered to date? And where can feminists devoted to a just and durable end to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict go from here?
