Summary/Abstract |
The military potential of nanotechnology was anticipated by its proponents from the early stages of its development, and explicit programmes for this purpose are now well established. However, the impact of nanotechnology on arms control is very unlikely to be merely additive. Instead, it threatens to undermine the arms control paradigm, for reasons explored in this paper. These include the place of nanoscience and nanotechnology as the principal enablers of technological convergence; the extension from dual-use to multiple-use dilemmas arising from new materials and processes, and their integration into economic development and competitiveness; low entry-level infrastructural requirements (already a feature of biotechnology); and a blurring of the distinction between offensive arms and capabilities likely to be viewed as threatening.

Summary/Abstract |
The paper examines the science-and-technology system and its top-priority area, the rocket-and-space sector of the defense-industrial complex (DIC). The author goes over the R&D priorities for nanotechnolo-gy development in Russia in the interests of defense industry enterprises.

Summary/Abstract |
The growing economic and therapeutic importance of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has prompted the governments of East Asian countries to develop it into an industry. The current research on the application of nanotechnology in CHM is deemed a new field of study. This article focuses on the issue of overly broad patent applications and assignments in the PR China by examining a case in which a patentee successfully registered more than 900 nano-based CHM patents in China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), all of which were based on the same preparation process. This article further shows that the proliferation of nano-based CHM patents in China is due to the illusion of biomedical technological progress and that the current irrational exuberance for patents not only is a bubble that will burst, but also presents barriers to innovation and invention in the emerging biopharmaceutical ind ustry and the nano-based CHM market.

Summary/Abstract |
Technological development of wood polymer composites (WPC) is a very promising approach to overcome most of the disadvantageous properties of wood products, for example their poor mechanical strength, poor dimensional stability, susceptibility to fungal attack, weathering and the like. To find the substitute for costly items of hard wood, suitable technologies have been developed to modify softwood to meet specific end-use requirements. Various vinyl monomers and/or copolymers or thermosetting resin in combination with different types of cross linking agents, flame retarding agents have been used to improve the properties of wood. Nanotechnology is a new area of science and technology which opens up new opportunities to develop wood based products with desired properties. Now-a-days government is making strict legislations to promote green technology for the protection of environment world wide. With the depletion of petroleum resources at alarming rate, it is high time to replace petroleum-based products by some sustainable alternative products based on vegetable biomass. The bio-based resins obtained from renewable feedstock have been widely utilized by taking the advantages of easy availability, renewable nature and low cost. The green route of modification of wood is widely encouraged. With the progress of technological development, now it is possible to avoid the hazardous influence of organic solvents by using water as solvent or diluents formodification of wood. WPC has got tremendous scope for use in diverse areas of applications.

Summary/Abstract |
Whether military nanotechnology is science fiction or fact depends on where you look on the broad spectrum from materials with engineered nanoscale structures to self-replicating virus-like killer robots. The former are with us now, while the later remain in the feverish dreams of enthusiasts and prophets of doom. And there is much in research and development in between.
