Summary/Abstract |
Since the normalisation of relations in January 1992, Israel has been unable to pursue its military relations with China as before. This was primarily due to American pressures and its perception of China as its new strategic threat. Given its limited political options, arms sales and other forms of security assistance function as Israel's principal instrument of promoting its foreign policy interests. The weakening of American economic power and hence political influence, emergence of China as the second-largest economy in the world and China's growing strategic relations with the Middle East is likely to result in Israel re-examining its no-arms policy towards China.

Summary/Abstract |
The ever-turbulent Middle East got a jolt in early 2020 with the outbreak of COVID-19, which affected all the countries of the region and all facets of life. Some managed to mitigate the pandemic through better utilization of their healthcare facilities, quick policy responses and better enforcement of lockdown measures, and countries such as Israel, UAE, and Bahrain deployed technological means and smartphone apps to trace and minimize the spread. In countries such as Libya, Syria, and Yemen—already amid civil war—the health services were stretched beyond limits.

Summary/Abstract |
By posthumously bestowing the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2019 upon Sultan Qaboos of Oman, New Delhi seeks to mend some of the diplomatic faux pas committed by previous governments.1 Over time, India developed such soft power honors to expand its diplomatic footprint. These include having international figures as chief guests for Republic Day celebrations (since 1950) or bestowing the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding (since 1965) and International Gandhi Peace Prize (since 1995). There are also nonofficial awards like the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development (from 1986) to further Indian interests. Due to political considerations, Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award (since 1954), was also awarded to Nelson Mandela when India’s citizenship is the criteria.

Summary/Abstract |
The Turkish invasion of northern Syria, which began in early October 2019, is bound to complicate the political resolution of the Syrian crisis. It came hours after President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the small American troops (about 1,000) committed to fighting extremist groups in Syria. Both the moves came weeks after the drone attacks on the Armco facility in Saudi Arabia and subsequent uncertainty over continued flow of oil at a reasonable price. For its part, Iran had denied any direct involvement in the attack.

Summary/Abstract |
Mahatma Gandhi’s 1938 statement that ‘Palestine belongs to the Arabs’ has not lost its relevance even after India reversed its four-decade-old policy of recognition-without-relations and normalised relations with Israel in January 1992. Critics see growing Indo-Israeli relations as an abandonment of Gandhian values while supporters use the 1938 statement to reiterate India’s continued support for the Palestinians.

Summary/Abstract |
Iran, being a major player in the hydrocarbon sector, is both an opportunity and a challenge for India. While Iran's hydrocarbons could partly address India's growing appetite for oil and natural gas and contribute to its energy security, its willingness to transform its energy ties with Iran beyond purely commercial transactions coincided with its desire to negotiate a civil nuclear deal with the US. Moreover some of the energy deals between the two countries are stuck over price disputes and technology difficulties, while others have come under international pressure and scrutiny. While international sanctions against Iran undermine India's ability to pursue its energy ties with Iran, maintaining the status quo has some economic and political advantages. Hence, India is not yet ready to abandon Iran for the US.
