Application of a maritime framework to space: deep space conflict and warfare scenario / Straub, Jeremy   Article
Straub, Jeremy Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article considers how Klein’s argument for the use of a maritime framework for space warfare is buoyed by the consideration of deep space conflict both in application to terrestrial wars and in its own right. It describes the greater alignment of Corbett’s work with this deep space medium than with the orbital medium considered by Klein. Through this analysis, it suggests that possible futures need to consider the deep space medium, making Corbett/Klein’s model superior to other possible approaches.

China’s concept of space warfare / Singh, J V   Journal Article
Singh, J V Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Space warfare will be an integrated part of battle planning by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in any future conflict. One of the major proponents of integrated space power for the PLA, Maj Gen Cai Fengzhen, believes that control of portions of outer space is a natural extension of other forms of territorial control, such as sea or air control. China's contemplation of the military use of space has focussed on two broad areas, namely, how to use space in military operations to increase its offensive capability, and how to use space in military operations to deny space capabilities to adversaries

Chinese people's liberation army and space warfare / Wortzel, Larry M   Journal Article
Wortzel, Larry M Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2008.
Summary/Abstract Space warfare will be an integrated part of battle planning by the Chinese People's Liberation Army in any future conflict with the United States. The People's Liberation Army has carefully absorbed and is reacting to what the American armed forces have published on space warfare and counter-space operations. Chinese strategists and legal scholars are engaged in an internal debate on how traditional ideas of sovereignty and the laws of war apply in space. One authoritative volume explored the importance of ensuring that the People's Liberation Army sets out legal justifications for military actions in advance of any conflict. Chinese scholars believe that many of the concepts surrounding the conduct of war on the "common seas" apply in space. Also, there is disagreement between the United States and China on the American position on outer space. The United States treats "peaceful uses" to mean "non-aggressive," whereas the Chinese interpretation is that to be peaceful uses, it must be "non-military."

From the sea to outer space: the command of space as the foundation of spacepower theory / Bowen, Bleddyn E   Journal Article
Bowen, Bleddyn E Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Colin Gray once lamented the absence of a ‘Mahan for the final frontier’ and spacepower theory in strategic studies. This article proposes the command of space as the fundamental concept of spacepower theory, and that Mahan himself has much to offer in the endeavour of spacepower theory-making than has hitherto been realised. The theory is advanced by tempering versions of the ‘command of space’, stressing its educational intent, and explaining the nuanced sub-concepts of space control and denial through understanding some precedents set by seapower theory. In the process, aspects of Mahanian and Corbettian seapower theory are unified.

Influence of technology on space strategy / Klein, John J   Journal Article
Klein, John J Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The influence of technology on the conduct of warfare and the development of strategy is still largely misunderstood. This confusion also holds true regarding technology's influence on space warfare and the development of space strategy. Judging from history, we can expect that advances in space-related technology will be used in ways commensurate with the current paradigm, especially with respect to military operations. Therefore, space operations will probably play supporting roles to operations on land, at sea, and in the air, at least in the near term. It will likely be some time until the strategic advantages of space-based or space-enabled operations are fully appreciated and effectively employed. Additionally, the historical theory and principles of general warfare remain valid, even when considering military operations in space. While advances in space-related technology or space-based weaponry will not change the fundamental nature of warfare, they are expected to change warfare's conduct and character. Through a better understanding of technology's influence on military operations, it is possible to develop a more complete theory and more fully developed strategic principles of space warfare.
