Apache and Chinook – Rotary Wing Capability Boost / Chopra, Anil   Journal Article
Chopra, Anil Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Army (IA) will soon have formidable attack helicopter capability and will use for Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) / Destruction of Enemy Air Defences (DEAD), Counter Air, Interdiction at varying depths inside enemy territory, Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), etc. in furtherance of both air and ground battles. It would act as a tremendous force-multiplier at the point of decision, when required. Indigenous helicopters have taken reasonable shape but are held up due to delayed decision on weapons. Addition of the Chinook, Apache, the Rudra and MH 60 Romeo Seahawk helicopters will give a massive boost to the capability. Rotary wing fleet will continue to remain a very significant fleet both, in war and peace.

Beyond the acquisition of C-130Js and C-17s / Chordia, Ashok K   Journal Article

Summary/Abstract Infiltration, skirmishes and wars on the borders, terrorist attacks in cities, the Naxalite menace, natural calamities, major accidents, evacuation of expatriates from troubled foreign countries, humanitarian aid to foreign countries, reconstruction and development in war-torn friendly countries - the response to all these situations and many more, demands large-scale movement of men and material. Often, secrecy is essential; always, time is of the essence. Reliable airlift capability and prompt action is the lifeblood of such missions. A timely airlift of troops by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to the Maldives frustrated the designs of a band of terrorists and averted a coup d'état in November 1988. Operation Cactus was a shot in the arm for Indian diplomacy. In some ways, India continues to gain from the stature thus attained. Airlift capability is a powerful tool for pursuing foreign policy objectives through employment of resources and capabilities. It has the power to change attitudes and build perceptions.

Combat fleet of the IAF: present and future / Kukreja , Dhiraj   Article
Kukreja , Dhiraj Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Combat aircraft constitute the cutting edge of any air force and so it is with the IAF as well. Modernisation and upgradation of combat platforms are ongoing processes that will help the IAF maintain the operational edge at all times. By the end of the 15th Five Year Plan, it is expected that the IAF inventory would consist largely of fourth and fifth generation platforms. Notwithstanding the depleting numbers that are being witnessed today, the continuing induction of new combat platforms such as the SU 30 MKI as well as the plans of acquiring the Rafale and the Tejas, the IAF would have the capability of long-range precision attack and of delivering conventional and nuclear weapons. This would give the IAF not just the necessary deterrence capability, but also a reliable second-strike capability.
