Ayatollah's praetorians: the Islamic revolutionary Guard corps and the 2009 election crisis / Safshekan, Roozbeh; Sabet, Farzan   Journal Article
Safshekan, Roozbeh Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract One of the central questions of the 2009 Iranian Presidential Election crisis has been the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This article argues that what we are witnessing goes beyond the institution of the IRGC to the unmasking of a new faction in Iranian politics, which has been overtly (through elections) and covertly (through penetration of state institutions and the economy) transforming power in the Islamic Republic of Iran since at least 2003.

Breakthroughs in faith / Roy, Olivier   Journal Article
Roy, Olivier Journal Article

Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract Florence-Faith made a sudden breakthrough into contemporary global politics with the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. From the Taliban to al-Qaida, the following three decades have been full of international tensions where faith was a leading factor, but this unease has by no means been restricted to the Muslim world. The Catholic Church found a new visibility under the leadership of John Paul II, shaking the communist grasp on Eastern Europe. Millions of converts from Catholicism to Protestantism are reshaping domestic politics in Brazil and other Latin America countries. Conversions from Islam to Christianity have created diplomatic hurdles in Malaysia and Afghanistan, while foreign missionary activities came under state scrutiny in India, Russia, and France. The Falun Gong sect waged an international campaign to pressure the Chinese government to remove a ban on the group. The affairs of Salman Rushdie and the Danish cartoons seemed to pit the Muslim world against the West, while the rise of Islam in Europe has raised anxieties in the United States and Israel, with the spectre of a looming Eurabia haunting urban neighborhoods and diplomatic corridors alike.

Contextualizing the Indo-Iranian relations / Baba, Noor Ahmad   Journal Article
Baba, Noor Ahmad Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract The Islamic revolution in Iran during 1978-79 resulted in bringing about a fundamental change in the Iranian foreign policy orientation that had a positive bearing on the indo-Iranian relationship. To reinforce this relationship the two countries began to discover and emphasize a number of commonalities between the two in history and in contemporary times. In this context while as Pakistan continued to be pro-west and the US partner in anti-Soviet war in Afghanistan, Iran gained greater proximity with India as a member of non- aligned community. In the changed context Iran became weary of the OIC and its activities. This indifference towards OIC and many of its conservatively oriented concerns was reinforced by Iraq-Iran war that polarized the Muslim countries.

High visibility, low profile: the Shi'a in Oman under sultan Qaboos / Valeri, Marc   Journal Article
Valeri, Marc Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract If the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 has produced unprecedented consequences for the internal policies of Middle Eastern regimes, this is not related to the upsurge of democratization that was supposed to spread like a contagion through the neighboring countries. Rather, it is due to the increased impact of the Shi?i issue on the national political agendas of many Arab states. Following the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime, many observers thus drew attention to the emergence of what they regarded as a Shi?i "revival" in the Middle East-a perception that the military success of the Lebanese Hizbullah against Israel in the summer of 2006 seemed to confirm.

Iran and India: the need for constructive re-engagement / Zahirinejad, Mahnaz   Journal Article
Zahirinejad, Mahnaz Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Since the Islamic Revolution, Iran and the United States have been locked in a bitter conflict. Although it has not yet degenerated into a war, as has been the case with some international conflicts, isolation of the Islamic government has become the basic objective of US foreign policy towards Iran. US policymakers maintain that economic sanctions can force the government of Iran to change its policy on many international issues. The sanctions have had their impact, as can be seen by the gradual decline in Iran-Europe relations, and the Iranian state has lost the support of its traditional partners. In such circumstances, some Iranian policymakers have proposed that Iran should replace its European partners with Asian countries in need of energy. This explains the shift in Iranian policy towards Asian countries.
