Summary/Abstract |
What happens in Afghanistan post 2014 is uncertain. The situation being highly dynamic, it is difficult to make accurate forecasts. Most forecasts are gloomy, and predict political instability, a worsening security situation, a weak economy and violence. However, this pessimistic scenario need not materialise if post 2014 security mechanisms, economic assistance, and a stable political system are put in place. The outcome of the presidential elections on 5th April 2014, the nature of security uncertainties after 2014, and the success or failure of Karzai's efforts at reconciliation with Taliban would influence the situation post 2014.

Summary/Abstract |
Bangladesh in 2013 exhibited intense political polarization that was both frustrating and ominous. Several factors exacerbated political tensions in the country including the war crimes trial and disagreements relating to the caretaker government. Judgments and rulings by the courts also fed the forces of political turmoil. The economic situation was relatively good but faced increasingly difficult challenges. In terms of international relations, particularly with India and the U.S., the year was unproductive.

Summary/Abstract |
The Eurozone economy is stalling. Growth forecasts have been revised down. Inflation is falling, well below the level consistent with the definition of price stability (two percent). Unemployment remains high. Divergences between the members of the monetary union have not shrank, with northern countries recording large and increasing surpluses in their current accounts, while the deficits in the south have largely been cut through sharp contractions in domestic demand and imports.

Summary/Abstract |
Argentine Vice-President Amado Boudou on 2 February responded to recent developments in the Argentina-UK territorial dispute over the Falklands Islands (Malvinas) by asserting that "British colonialism is a shame for humanity". That statement came on the day that Prince William, second in line to the UK throne, arrived in the South Atlantic islands to begin a six-week tour of duty as a rescue helicopter pilot, and only two days after the UK had announced the deployment of a Type-45 destroyer to the area. Both of those actions have been presented by the UK authorities as "routine". If that is the case, it has not been perceived that way in Argentina, where a range of political figures from both government and opposition have condemned the UK moves as bellicose and threatening.

Summary/Abstract |
AS THE WORLD'S power brokers--well, ministers and central bankers from 188 countries--gather in October for the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund, they will again be confronted by evidence that the IMF is still in need of proper reform. This time, the evidence comes not only in the form of continued global economic malaise and financial instability, but the IMF'S brutally honest self-evaluation of its role in the insufficient Greek bailout (and, by implication, its involvement in other European countries). On the heels of this disappointing performance, one thing is clear: The IMF is still stuck in the last century
